Winter Holiday Disability Program

With the support of TADTas the Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre is conducting a winter school holiday intensive swimming program for kids living with disabilities.

The program is open to all kids with a disability between the ages of 5 and 15, no matter their confidence and skills in the water. The small group lessons will run over 4 consecutive days in the first week of the July holidays. Lessons will run for 30 minutes, with each class level and time being determined by the student’s skills and swimming background.

Depending on the aquatic background of participants the program will aim to:

  • Increase safety practices and awareness around water

  • Develop confidence in the water

  • Introduce and improve different swimming strokes

People who have had trouble accessing swim programs and NDIS funding are encouraged to apply.

This program has come to life thanks to the incredible suggestion made by Ollie, a primary school student at Fahan. Ollie was participating in a program during Children’s Week, where students were asked to express their vision and desires for a better Hobart. Ollie’s desire was for regular free swimming program for the disabled. Although not free, this program is kindly subsidised through the support of TADTas, allowing for the fee to be set at a $20 per student.
