DKHAC's Learn to Swim program is designed to guide its participants along the aquatic pathway from water familiarisation to water confidence. We focus on the core aquatic skills and on developing an understanding of safety in and around the water.

Little Wonders 1-2

For ages 6 months to 2 years-A progressive water‑confidence program, starting with gentle, supported introduction to the water & evolving into guided independence. Parents learn essential aquatic safety skills while children build comfort, confidence, & early abilities like floating, kicking, and paddling.

Skills Taught at this level:  

  • Parent/ Guardian Education 

  • Supported Safe Entry/ Exits 

  • Supported Blowing Bubbles 

  • Supported Floats on Front and Back 

  • Supported Kicking Legs and Arms 

  • Supported Gliding on Front and Back 

  • Supported Submersion 

 

Little Wonders 3

For ages 2 – 3 years-Children begin to follow cues, enter and exit the water independently and explore floating, gliding, kicking and submersion with minimal support building confidence and water safety skills while parents actively encourage independence.

  • Active Independence / Confidence  

  • Blowing Bubbles 

  • Floating on Front and Back 

  • Kicking Legs and Basic Arms

Little Wonders 4

For ages 3 – 4 years-fostering independence in young swimmers through teacher-guided aquatic skill development, water safety awareness and active parental encouragement within the water.

Skills Taught at this level: 

  • Parent/ Guardian Education 

  • Independent Safe Entry/ Exits 

  • Active Independence / Confidence  

  • Independent Blowing Bubbles 

  • Independent Floating on Front and Back 

  • Independent Kicking Legs and Arms 

  • Independent Gliding on Front and Back

Level 1

At this level, children are working towards developing key water safety and swimming skills, learning to enter and exit safely, float, glide, kick, and move through the water, submerge and exhale underwater and recognise water hazards and helpers. This is the first level where children participate independently.

Skills Taught at this level: 

  • Water Hazards / Personal Safety 

  • Safe Entry / Exits 

  • Floating on Front and Back 

  • Kicking Legs 

  • Gliding on Front and Back 

  • Basic Submersion 

Level 2

At this level, children are working towards building independence and safety awareness. Learning to identify aquatic dangers, enter and exit the water safely, float and rotate using buoyant aids, tread water, fit a lifejacket, glide with coordinated kicking, swimming 5m, retrieve objects underwater and understand how to get help in an emergency.

Skills Taught at this level: 

  • Floating on Front/ Back with Recovery 

  • Fitting a Lifejacket 

  • Treading Water (with aid) 

  • 5 Metres Basic Freestyle 

  • 5 Metres Basic Backstroke 

  • Basic Water Rescue 

Level 3

At this level, children are working towards strengthening their water safety & swimming skills. Practicing safe behaviour around aquatic environments, recovering from a simulated fall-in, floating and treading water for 30 seconds, swimming 10m freestyle and 5m backstroke, navigating underwater obstacles and learning how to respond in an emergency.

Skills Taught at this level: 

  • Fall in Entry (and Recover) 

  • Treading Water (without aid) 

  • 10 Metres Freestyle (with Breathing) 

  • 10 Metres Basic Backstroke 

  • 5 Metres Survival Backstroke 

  • Learn Basic Survival Sequence 

Level 4

At this level, children are working towards confidently swimming in deeper water. Practicing safe step-in entries, floating and rotating, swimming 15m freestyle, 15m backstroke and 10m survival strokes, performing a surface dive to retrieve objects, and learning how to recognise and respond to aquatic emergencies using talk rescue techniques.

  • Step in Entry (and Recover) 

  • 15 Metres Freestyle 

  • 15 Metres Backstroke 

  • 10 Metres Survival Backstroke 

  • 10 Metres Breaststroke Kick 

  • Surface Dives 

  • Talk Rescues 

Level 5

At this level, children are working towards mastering key survival and swimming skills. Practicing compact jumps, sculling in both directions, floating and treading water with a lifejacket, swimming multiple strokes over longer distances (15-25m), recognising and responding to emergencies and performing a full survival sequence using a buoyant aid.

  • Compact Jump Entry and Sculling 

  • 25 Metres Freestyle 

  • 25 Metres Backstroke 

  • 15 Metres Survival Backstroke 

  • 15 Metres Basic Breaststroke  

  • 15 Metres Butterfly 

  • 15 Metres Side Stroke 

  • Tumble Turns 

  • Reach Rescues 

Level 6

At this level, children are working towards advanced water safety and swimming skills. Practicing stride entries, floating and treading water for one minute, swimming multiple strokes over longer distances (25m – 50m), performing surface dives and underwater retrievals, using throw rescue techniques, and completing a full survival sequence without a buoyant aid.

  • 50 Metres Backstroke

  • 25 Metres Basic Breaststroke
